Jewelry photos that pass Etsy's rules
Etsy's requirements are short, specific and widely misquoted. Here they are from Etsy's own documentation, connected to what actually happens when you edit a jewelry photo.
What Etsy actually requires
From Etsy's own documentation, with requirements and recommendations kept apart. Every figure comes from one shared module, so no two pages here can disagree.

The order that avoids the problem
Each step assumes the previous one, which is why sequence matters more than any single setting.
Start sharp
Use the best original you have. Nothing later in this sequence recovers detail that was never captured.
Edit freely
Remove the background, preview on a model, or adjust. This is the working stage and the file is a working file.
Flatten before you leave
Composite onto a solid background. A transparent working file must never become the upload.
Resize without enlarging
Reach Etsy's recommended size by re-exporting from the original if you have to. Do not upsample.
Check the finished file
Verify what you are about to upload, not what you edited three steps ago.
Before you upload
Two minutes, and it removes the most common way a jewelry listing image goes wrong.
- The file has no transparency left in it.
- It meets Etsy's recommended size — for listing photos there is no minimum to fall below.
- It is in an accepted format.
- It is small enough to upload reliably.
- It was not enlarged to reach the target size.
- The piece is still your piece — stone count, metal colour and item count match the original.
Questions
Why did my listing photo turn black?
Because a transparent PNG was uploaded. Etsy does not support transparent .png files, and its documentation states the transparent parts will appear black. Flatten the cutout onto a background first.
What size should an Etsy listing photo be?
Etsy publishes two figures for listing photos and BOTH are recommendations — it states no hard minimum for them at all. One is the size recommendation; the other applies to the first photo and is the one Etsy attaches a stated consequence to. Both are in the table above, taken from Etsy's own page, and several widely-published pages give figures that contradict it.
Can I just upscale a small photo to reach the recommended size?
You can, and you should not. Enlarging adds pixels rather than detail, so the file passes the size check and looks worse. Re-export from the original at a higher resolution instead.
How do I know a file is compliant before I upload it?
