Etsy's nine image slots

Etsy documents nine separate image types and they do not share the same rules. Every number below comes from Etsy's own help page.

9 slots · “minimum required” and “recommended” are Etsy's own words, kept apart deliberately.

Rules that apply to every image

  • requirementEtsy accepts only .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files.

    Etsy: ““All images in your shop should be one of these file types: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, or .heic. These are the only image file types Etsy supports.””

  • requirementAnimated GIFs are not supported.

    Etsy: “Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported.”

  • requirementTransparent PNGs are not supported: transparent areas appear BLACK on Etsy. Flatten onto white before uploading.

    Etsy: “If a file contains transparency, the transparent parts of the image will appear black on Etsy.”

  • recommendationFiles over 1 MB may not finish uploading.

    Etsy: “Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection.”

  • informationalEtsy converts images to sRGB. A colour profile cannot be verified reliably from a local file.

    Etsy: ““convert your images to sRGB using an image editing software before uploading ... (CMYK color profile is for print only)””

How this checker works

Your file is read in your own browser. We look at the actual bytes rather than the file name, so a .bmp renamed to .jpg is still reported as unsupported. Dimensions come from the image header, which means a very large file can be judged without decoding it.

We separate requirements from recommendations. A size Etsy calls “minimum required” fails. A size Etsy “recommends” produces a warning, never a failure.

We do not claim checks we cannot make. Colour profile, Etsy Plus membership and Etsy's server-side upload behaviour cannot be determined from a local file, so they are shown as information — never as “passed”.

We never enlarge an image. Etsy notes that increasing an image's size can cost resolution, so if your file is smaller than the target we say so instead of inventing pixels.
