Etsy image sizes: every slot, from Etsy's own documentation

Etsy has nine separate image slots and they do not share the same rules. Here is each one, taken from Etsy's official help page and dated, plus the file rules that apply to all of them.

Check a file against these rules — it runs in your browser.

9 slots · “minimum required” and “recommended” are Etsy's own words, kept apart deliberately.

Listing photos

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 x 2000 px. That is a recommendation, not a hard minimum.

The number that carries a stated consequence is the first photo: at least 635 x 635 px. Etsy states listings below this show up lower in search.

The first photo should be landscape or square so the centre survives Etsy's thumbnail crops.

Your first photo also dictates the shape of every photo after it.

Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape — leave a border so nothing important is trimmed.

Banners — four different things

“Etsy banner” is not one size. The mini shop banner requires at least 1200 x 160 and is recommended at 1600 x 213. The big shop banner requires at least 1200 x 300 and is recommended at 1600 x 400. The collage banner does have minimums, and they change with the number of images in it. The carousel banner does not: Etsy publishes a recommended size for it and no minimum at all. Both are Etsy Plus features.

A figure that circulates widely does not match Etsy's page. The mini banner's recommended size is 1600 x 213 — the frequently-quoted 1600 x 400 is the big banner. There is also no single banner aspect ratio: the big banner is 4:1, the mini banner is closer to 7.5:1. Every row in the table above links back to Etsy's own wording.

File rules that apply to every image

  • requirementEtsy accepts only .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files.

Etsy: ““All images in your shop should be one of these file types: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, or .heic. These are the only image file types Etsy supports.””

  • requirementAnimated GIFs are not supported.

Etsy: “Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported.”

  • requirementTransparent PNGs are not supported: transparent areas appear BLACK on Etsy. Flatten onto white before uploading.

Etsy: “If a file contains transparency, the transparent parts of the image will appear black on Etsy.”

  • recommendationFiles over 1 MB may not finish uploading.

Etsy: “Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection.”

  • informationalEtsy converts images to sRGB. A colour profile cannot be verified reliably from a local file.

Etsy: ““convert your images to sRGB using an image editing software before uploading ... (CMYK color profile is for print only)””

Why a transparent PNG turns black

This is the one that catches people out. Etsy does not support transparent PNG files: if your image has a transparent background, those areas appear black once uploaded.

It matters most right after you remove a background. A background remover typically hands back a transparent PNG — which is exactly the file Etsy cannot use. Flatten it onto a solid colour first. The checker does that for you.
