Shopify product image sizes
Shopify's numeric limits are generous enough that most sellers never hit them. The rule that actually decides how a store looks is not a number at all — it is a recommendation about consistency, and Shopify makes it themselves.
What Shopify actually says
Quoted from Shopify's documentation, read on 2026-08-15. The class column is the part most summaries drop.
| Rule | Value | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum file size | under 20 MB | requirement |
| Maximum dimensions | 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) | requirement |
| Recommended square size | 2048 x 2048 px | recommendation |
| Aspect ratio across a collection | keep it identical | recommendation |
| Accepted formats | PNG and JPEG are the best options | informational |
Why the ratio recommendation outranks the size recommendation
A shopper does not see your product images one at a time. They see a grid, and a grid is read as a single object before any individual tile is. Inconsistent aspect ratios break that object: tiles crop differently, products sit at different apparent scales, and the eye reads the whole page as unfinished before it has looked at anything.
This matters more for jewelry than for most categories, because the products genuinely are different shapes. A long pendant, a wide cuff and a small stud have nothing in common dimensionally. If each is cropped to fit itself, the grid has no rhythm at all.
The fix is unglamorous: choose one ratio, usually square, and crop every main image to it — including the ones where that means leaving generous empty space around a small piece. That empty space is not wasted; it is what makes the small piece read as small.
Before you upload
Five checks, in the order that catches the most problems soonest.
- One aspect ratio across every main image in the collection.
- Every file under 20 MB.
- No side longer than 5000 px, and no image over 25 megapixels.
- No image upscaled from a smaller original.
- Format chosen deliberately, not inherited from whatever the phone produced.
Questions
What is the best image size for Shopify?
Shopify recommends 2048 x 2048 px for square product images, in their words: "For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best." It is a recommendation rather than a requirement — smaller images upload and display fine, and upscaling to reach it does not help.
What is the maximum image size Shopify accepts?
5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels), and separately a file size under 20 MB. Both are hard limits: over either one, the upload fails rather than degrades.
Does aspect ratio matter on Shopify?
It is the recommendation Shopify makes about collections, and for jewelry it is the one worth following most closely, because the products vary so much in shape that inconsistent cropping is immediately visible in a grid.
Which image format should I use?
Shopify lists a long set of accepted formats: "Shopify also accepts PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP. Animated versions of GIF and WebP files are also supported." Accepted is not the same as ideal — for jewelry, a photograph belongs in JPEG and a transparent cut-out in PNG, and the rest of that list is compatibility rather than recommendation.
