Two readings, one ring: what changed was the method

What the specified method fixes, step by step

Each step is a place where two readings can either agree by construction or diverge.

  1. The instrument is specified rather than assumed

    The measurement is made with a ring stick that has defined characteristics. Two readings taken on instruments that meet the specification start from the same basis; two readings on unspecified instruments do not.

  2. The inner profile of the ring is identified

    The standard distinguishes a rounded inside profile from a flat one. This is not a description of style: it decides where the next step happens.

  3. The contact and measure point follows from the profile

Where two readings separate

Each row names a difference in method that can produce a different number from the same ring.

  • The two readings used different points on the thickness.

    Ask which point each one used. The standard fixes it by inner profile: the middle of the thickness for a rounded profile, the lower edge for a flat one.

  • The rings being compared have different inner profiles.

    Record the profile beside the reading. The standard separates the two cases precisely because the measure point differs between them.

  • The band is wide and each party used the gage differently.

    Record the practice used. The 1921 circular in the United States reports that some firms brought the top of the ring to the mark while others used a different part, and that this matters for wide bands.

  • A reading is stored as a property of the ring.

    Store the method with the number, so the reading can be reproduced instead of defended.

  • A generated image is offered in place of a measurement.

    Nothing here describes measuring, resolving or verifying a ring size from a photograph; the measurement remains a separate act.

What the printed control points are for

The text read on 19 August 2026 prints a diameter and a tolerance for five sizes: 41 at 13.05 mm, 51 at 16.23 mm, 61 at 19.42 mm, 71 at 22.60 mm and 76 at 24.19 mm, each with a tolerance of 0.02 mm. These values describe the measuring stick.

That distinction carries the whole point of the section. A tolerance of that order is a manufacturing requirement for an instrument, not a statement about how precisely a finger can be sized. The five values give the instrument fixed points to be checked against, which is what makes two instruments comparable in the first place.
