A ring size is a length, written as a whole number

A size that arrives with an order is a measured quantity in millimetres, not an entry in a list. This page states what the published definitions say that quantity is, and where the text read on 19 August 2026 stops.

The size is the measurement, not a code for it

A ring size looks like a catalogue value: a small whole number, printed on a sizer, repeated in a listing, entered in an order. Under the international standard it is not a catalogue value. ISO 8653:2016, second edition dated 15 January 2016 and titled Jewellery - Ring-sizes - Definition, measurement and designation, defines a ring-size in Clause 2.1 as the circumference of the bigger cylinder that could be inserted in the ring.

That definition names a length. The quantity being designated is the inner circumference of the ring, in millimetres, and the number is the value of that length rather than a pointer to it. Japan's national standard states the same quantity in its own words: JIS S 4700:1998 defines the size of a ring as the numerical value of the ring's inner circumference expressed in millimetres.

The practical consequence is narrow and useful. A size expressed in millimetres can be checked against an object, because there is something physical it claims to be equal to. A size expressed as a national number cannot be checked against anything on this page, because no source read here says what length it stands for.

Everything stated here was read from the published documents on 19 August 2026. The ISO text read was a partial preview, so this page reports what that text contains and makes no claim about the parts of the standard it does not include.

The identity of the international standard

It specifies a method to measure the ring-size using a ring stick with defined characteristics, mainly used during manufacturing steps, and specifies the designation of the result.

Sizes from 41 to 76, with the measurement scale of the ring stick specified as 160.0 mm and a tolerance of 0.5 mm on that length.
What the 2016 edition changed
It cancels and replaces the first edition, ISO 8653:1986. The changes its foreword lists include the addition of a table of diameters and tolerances, so that table is a 2016 addition rather than a long-standing part of the standard.
The Japanese definition
JIS S 4700:1998: the size of a ring is the numerical value of the ring's inner circumference expressed in millimetres.

Why the number arrives as a whole millimetre

An inner circumference measured on a real ring will not land on a whole millimetre by itself. The whole number comes from the designation rule, which is a separate step from the measurement.

JIS S 4700:1998 states that the size shall be indicated, following the number of the corresponding International Standard, as the nearest whole-millimetre value obtained by rounding the measured inner circumference. The designated size is therefore a rounded value, and the reading behind it is finer than the number that is written down.

The attribution matters here. This rounding rule is quoted from JIS S 4700:1998, the national standard of Japan. The designation clause of ISO 8653:2016 was not present in the copy of that text read on 19 August 2026, so nothing about rounding is attributed to the ISO document on this page.

Two rings can therefore carry the same designated size and still differ in measured circumference, because both readings rounded to the same whole millimetre. That is a property of the designation rule, not a fault in either measurement.

Before you record a size someone sent you

Each item keeps the number traceable to the document it came from.

  • Write down the unit that came with the number, and keep it there when the number is copied.
  • Keep the origin next to the value: a customer's own measurement, a supplier specification and a printed sizer are three different origins.
  • Read a whole number as a designation rounded to the nearest millimetre, not as an exact circumference.
  • Do not derive a diameter from a circumference on the strength of this page; the text read prints no formula for it.
  • Do not convert between national systems on the strength of this page; no source read here defines such a conversion.
  • Do not fill in a diameter for a size the read text does not print.

What this page does not settle

Questions

Is a ring size an arbitrary code, or is it a real physical measurement?

It is a measurement. ISO 8653:2016 defines a ring-size in Clause 2.1 as the circumference of the bigger cylinder that could be inserted in the ring, and JIS S 4700:1998 defines the size of a ring as the numerical value of its inner circumference in millimetres. The number is the length itself. Both documents were read on 19 August 2026.

Is the number the diameter or the circumference?

Both definitions read for this page name the inner circumference. Neither text read prints a formula for turning that circumference into a diameter, so this page does not give one.

Why is a ring size a whole number?

Because of the designation rule. JIS S 4700:1998 indicates the size as the measured inner circumference rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. The designation clause of ISO 8653:2016 was not present in the text read, so the rounding rule is attributed here to the Japanese standard only.

Does the standard print a diameter for every size?

Not in the copy read for this page. The diameter table in the ISO 8653:2016 text read on 19 August 2026 carries five sizes - 41, 51, 61, 71 and 76 - and nothing was read for the sizes between them. That table is also new in the 2016 edition, which cancels and replaces ISO 8653:1986.
