Setting type decides the photograph
Lighting advice for jewelry is usually organised by material: one method for diamond, another for pearl, another for opaque stone. That organisation stops working the moment the same stone appears in two different mounts, because the metal around a stone is what decides which directions light can enter and leave by.
The mount decides before the stone does
Ask how to light a stone and the answer usually starts with the material. That answer is useful until the same stone turns up in a different mount, and then it stops predicting anything. The reason is not that the material advice was wrong. It is that the material was never the part of the piece controlling where light could go.
A setting is an arrangement of openings. The metal holds the stone by standing in certain directions and not in others, and each direction it leaves open is a path light can travel along, inwards or outwards. Change the pattern of metal and you change what the stone is able to collect and what it is able to return, without changing the stone at all.
The underlying behaviour of the metal and the stone is set out in this site's ring guide and is not repeated here: polished metal acts as a curved mirror and records the room rather than the light, and the difference between bright and dark areas is what a viewer reads as sparkle. Take that as given. The narrower question on this page is what the mount does to it.
An open mount and a closed mount are different objects
In a prong setting the metal touches the stone at a few points and leaves the perimeter open. Light can reach the stone from the sides, from below and from behind, which means whatever is in those directions becomes part of what the stone returns. Arranging the surroundings is therefore the first control, not the last one.
A bezel setting replaces those openings with a continuous wall. If that wall is backed, the paths behind the stone are gone entirely. This matters more than it first sounds: a transparent stone shows what is behind it, so when there is nothing behind it, that mechanism is not weakened but absent. A stone that looks lifeless in a closed mount is often being asked to do something the mount has made impossible.
The other families sit between these. A channel holds a row of stones between two walls and is open from above, so the row is legible from above and hidden from a low angle. A flush setting places the stone into the surface of the metal, so the stone and the metal share nearly the same plane and are seen together. A tension mount grips the stone at opposite edges and leaves the rest of the perimeter open, so it behaves closer to a prong setting than its solid appearance suggests.
So the first step is a description, not a setting on the camera: name which directions this mount leaves open — above, the sides, below, behind. Everything after that follows from the list.
A rim and a prong want opposite things from the same light
The metal at the edge of the stone is in the photograph too, and it is not a neutral border. A rim is a small curved surface, and a small convex surface shows a miniature of whatever is lighting it, the edge of that source included. Point a narrow source with a definite boundary at a bezel and the rim reproduces that boundary as a line. Give the same rim a wide source and the curve receives a gradual transition instead. This is why a mount with a continuous rim asks for a wide source: the metal next to the subject is a curve, and a curve records the shape of what lights it.
A prong is the opposite kind of object. It is small, opaque and standing above the surface it sits on, and what separates it from the stone behind it is the shadow it casts rather than its own brightness — the same reading by which a chain shows its pattern. That shadow is not an accident to be removed. It is the thing that tells a viewer the stone is held. The choice worth making is where it lands: across the table of the stone, or off towards the edge where it describes the setting without covering the face of it.
Position is the control here, more than power. At these working distances light falls off noticeably across small changes in distance, so moving a source a short way changes whether a bezel wall stands between it and the stone, and changes how deep into an open mount it can reach. Turning a source up does not move the wall.
How high the stone sits decides the camera height
As magnification increases, depth of field narrows, so at jewelry distances the sharp region is shallow. What the mount contributes is how much of the piece has to fit inside it.
A flush setting puts the stone into the surface of the metal, so the two are close to the same plane and one sharp region can hold both. A raised prong or tension mount lifts the table of the stone above the band, and now there are two planes with a real distance between them. That distance was created by the mount, and it is the reason a frame can come out with a sharp band and a soft stone even though nothing was done wrong with the camera.
There are two answers, and camera height is the one to try first. Moving the camera changes the angle between the table and the metal, which brings them closer to a single plane instead of asking the lens to cover a separation. When they cannot be brought together, one of them has to be chosen — and which one deserves the sharpness is an editorial question rather than a technical one, which this site answers separately. The point here is narrower: the mount is what decides whether that question comes up at all.
Camera angle also decides whether the setting is visible as a setting. Seen from directly above, prongs sit over the face of the stone; seen from lower, they move towards the silhouette and describe the profile of the piece instead. A channel row is legible from above and vanishes from below. Neither view is correct in general. The mount tells you which one shows what the listing is describing.
Reading the mount before you light it
Six checks, in order. None of them are camera settings.
- Name which directions the mount leaves open: above, the sides, below, behind.
- If the back is closed, plan the frame without anything appearing through the stone.
- If a continuous rim surrounds the stone, use a wide source so the rim receives a transition rather than an edge.
- If prongs stand over the stone, decide where their shadows should fall before moving the source.
- If the stone is raised above the metal, change camera height until the table and the band are closer to one plane.
- Compare the frame with the description: a low angle can hide a channel row behind the walls that hold it.

Questions
Why does the same lighting work for one ring and fail for another with the same stone?
Because the mounts are different. A setting is an arrangement of openings, and those openings decide which directions light can enter and leave by. When the second piece closes a direction the first one left open, the source is still arriving somewhere the stone can no longer use, and the material of the stone has nothing to do with it.
How should I light a bezel-set stone compared with a prong-set one?
A bezel has a continuous rim, and a small curved surface reproduces the shape of whatever lights it, edge included, so it asks for a wide source that gives it a transition instead of a line. A prong setting leaves the perimeter open, so the work moves to what is around and beneath the piece, and to deciding where the shadows of the prongs should fall.
Why does my bezel-set transparent stone look dark?
Check the back of the setting first. If it is closed, there is nothing behind the stone to be seen through it, so that behaviour is unavailable rather than weak. If the back is open, the surrounding wall may simply be standing between the source and the stone — at these distances a small change in where the source sits changes how far into the mount it reaches.
Does the setting change the camera angle as well as the light?
Yes, in two ways. How high the stone sits decides how far apart the table and the metal are, and camera height is what brings those planes closer together. And the angle decides whether the mount is visible as a mount: prongs sit over the face of the stone from directly above and move to the silhouette from lower down, while a channel row reads from above and disappears from a low position.
