Photographing matte, brushed and hammered finishes
Lighting setups get named after metals — the silver setup, the gold setup. But two rings cut from the same bar behave differently once one is polished and the other brushed, and a hammered piece behaves like neither. The finish is the property that selects the source.
The metal name is not the instruction
Setups get described by material: this is how I light silver, this is how I light gold. It works for a while, because pieces in the same metal are frequently finished the same way, and then it stops working the first time a brushed band or a hammered cuff arrives and the familiar arrangement returns something dull.
The reason is that the alloy underneath was never the thing responding to the light. What responds is the treatment on top of it. Once you accept that a polished piece is photographing its surroundings, the question for a worked finish becomes concrete: what does this particular surface return, and what does that mean it has to be given? Brushed, matte and hammered give three different answers, and the answers are not variations on each other.
A brushed finish carries a direction
A brushed or satin surface has a grain, and the grain is the finish. If a photograph does not record which way it runs, it has recorded a piece with no surface description at all — the viewer sees fine marks and cannot tell whether they are the finish or something sitting on it.
The site's page on hallmarks sets out the mechanism for surface detail of this kind: it appears when the light arrives across it and vanishes when the light runs along it. A grain is that same kind of detail, continuous instead of confined to a few characters, so the same relationship decides whether it reads.
The practical consequence is specific to this finish. The grain is fixed in the metal — it cannot be moved on its own — so the only thing that changes its relationship with the source is orientation. Turn the piece. Moving the light changes the same angle, but it also changes every reflection, every shadow and the balance of the whole frame at once, while rotating the piece changes the one variable you are actually interested in. Then check the result the direct way: look at the exported file and say out loud which way the grain runs. If you cannot, nothing else about the frame matters yet.
A matte finish returns no picture of the source
A bead-blasted or sandblasted surface has no grain to orient and no bright area to place. There is no reflected shape to steer, which removes the control most jewelry lighting advice is built around. Photographers arriving from polished work frequently keep adjusting the source, waiting for something to appear, and nothing does.
What is left is shading — the difference in light between one part of the piece and another. Two things produce it. The first is the form itself: a broad source across curved metal gives a smooth transition, so a matte surface with any curvature in it will pass from lighter to darker as it turns away, and that passage is the only thing describing the shape. The second is distance. At close range the drop in light is visible across the small distances a piece occupies, so bringing the source nearer makes the near part of the piece brighter than the far part.
So with matte the picture is built from a gradient rather than from a highlight, and the two levers are how the piece is turned in relation to the form of the light and how close the source sits. If the frame is flat, one of those two is doing nothing yet.
A hammered finish is a field of small mirrors
A hammered surface is not a finish in the way the other two are. It is a geometry: the metal is dished where the tool landed and raised between the marks, so the surface is a field of small curves rather than one plane. If those raised parts are left bright, each behaves the way any small convex piece of metal behaves — it shows a miniature of the source, and that miniature includes the edge of the source.
That single fact explains both failures. Put a source in front of a hammered piece that is broad enough for every part of the field to see only the middle of it, and every part returns the same bright patch. Nothing separates one mark from its neighbour, and a heavily worked cuff photographs as a smooth one. Bring in a source small enough to be a point and each mark returns a hard bright dot, which reads as speckle rather than as hammer work.
The control, then, is not the softness of the source. It is where the edge of the source falls. Place the source so that its edge crosses the field, and some parts of the field return the bright side of that edge while their neighbours return what lies beyond it. The difference between neighbours is the texture. Move the source until that boundary sits across the part of the piece the frame is about, and check the result by looking for variation between adjacent marks rather than by looking at overall brightness.
If the hammered surface has also been matted, both mechanisms are in play at once: the geometry is still there but the marks no longer return a picture of anything, so read the matte section first and treat the hammering as form rather than as reflection.
When one piece carries two finishes
A brushed band with polished edges, or a hammered face with a bright rim, is a single object that wants two incompatible arrangements. The bright part is showing the room and the worked part is showing a gradient or an edge, and a source placed halfway between what each needs gives a weak version of both.
Decide instead which finish each frame is about, and shoot more than one. The listing can then carry a frame in which the brushed area is unmistakably brushed and a frame in which the polished area reads as polished, which is a more honest description of the piece than one frame in which neither is clearly either.
Checking the finish before you upload
Five checks, each about the surface rather than about the photograph.
- You can tell from the exported file at full size which way the grain runs on a brushed piece.
- On a hammered piece, marks next to each other do not all return the same brightness.
- On a matte piece, one part of the surface is lighter than another and the form is doing the describing.
- A piece carrying both a bright area and a worked area has a frame serving each.
- The source was chosen after looking at the finish, not after naming the metal.

Questions
Why does my brushed silver look flat in photos when the same setup works for polished pieces?
The setup was built around a mirror. A polished piece shows the room, so arranging the room is the whole job; a brushed piece instead has a grain, and the frame either records the direction of that grain or shows nothing. Change the angle between the grain and the source by rotating the piece rather than by moving the light, and judge the result by whether you can say which way the grain runs.
How do I photograph a hammered finish so the texture actually shows?
Work with the edge of the source rather than its softness. The raised parts between the marks each show a miniature of the source, edge included, so a source broad enough that every mark sees only its middle makes them all return the same thing and the texture flattens. Place the source so its edge crosses the field, then look for variation between neighbouring marks.
What kind of light works for a matte or satin finish?
One that produces a gradient, because a matte surface returns no picture of the source to place. A broad source across curved metal gives a smooth transition as the form turns away, and moving the source closer makes the drop in light visible across the piece. If the surface is one flat value, neither of those is working yet.
My piece is polished in one place and brushed in another — which one do I light for?
One per frame. The two finishes ask for different sources, so a position chosen halfway between them gives a weak version of each. Shoot the brushed area with the light that makes its grain read, shoot the polished area with the light that gives it something worth reflecting, and publish both.
