Adding black on purpose

A setup improved one problem at a time ends up bright, soft and even, and the jewelry in it ends up flat. This page treats dark as an instrument you position rather than as a fault you correct, and explains why a polished edge cannot appear until something dark is placed where the piece can see it.

The missing ingredient is not light

A setup that has been improved one problem at a time tends toward the same destination. A shadow appeared, so a second source went in. An edge looked hard, so the light was softened. A corner stayed dim, so something was moved closer. The result is a bright, even, technically clean photograph in which the piece has no edges at all.

The reason is that polished metal has no brightness of its own to photograph. It returns what surrounds it. Surround it with one even brightness and it returns one even brightness, and the outline that would have separated it from the surface has nothing to be made of. Nothing is broken in that photograph. Something is missing from it, and the missing thing is dark.

So dark is the thing to add — not less light, but a dark object, positioned the way a light is positioned. A card is held where the piece can see it, adjusted while you watch the frame, and taken away once it has done its work. The habit this page works against is the habit of treating every dark area as an error to be filled.

What you are adding is not a shadow

A shadow is light that did not arrive. You create one by putting something between the source and the piece, and you control it by moving whatever does the blocking. The dark in a polished edge is a different thing entirely. Nothing has been blocked. The surface is showing you an object that happens to be dark, in the same way it shows you the ceiling, the window and your own hands.

The behaviour underneath this is already set out on this site and holds here without modification: a polished piece acts as a curved mirror, and what looks like brilliance is a report on what it had available to reflect. This page starts where those two stop, on the sides that no surface underneath can reach.

The practical consequence is that you are working a different control. You are not adjusting how much light lands on the piece; you are choosing what appears in it. Move the card and the dark region travels with the angle rather than with the exposure. Take the card away and the region does not soften — it is gone, because the thing it was an image of is gone.

The edge of the card becomes a line in the metal

A small curved surface shows a miniature of the source, and it shows the source's boundary along with it. The pearl guide states the version of this that applies to lights: the edge of your light source becomes the edge of the highlight. A dark object placed in the same geometry does the same job in reverse. Its boundary becomes a line inside the piece.

That changes what you are aiming. You are not aiming a quantity of darkness at the piece; you are placing a line across it, and where that line falls decides what a viewer reads as form. A line that runs along the length of a band describes the band. A line that cuts across it describes nothing, and looks like something on the metal rather than something in it.

Size decides how definite that line is. Something broad gives a smooth transition on curved metal, so a broad dark object produces a graded sweep from bright to dark; a narrow one produces a boundary with a position you can point to. The graded version suits a rounded form, where the change from lit to dark is the description of the curve. The definite version suits an edge, where the whole point is that a viewer can see where the piece stops.

One warning about adjustment. At these working distances, light falls off noticeably across small distances, and everything else near the piece behaves with the same sensitivity. Moving the card a short way is not fine-tuning. Make one move, look at the frame, and make the next move from what you see rather than from what you intended.

When there is too much of it

Black is easy to over-apply, because the first result is encouraging. Edges appear, the piece gains shape, and the natural response is to add more. Past a certain point the card stops describing the piece and starts replacing it: the metal darkens overall, the bright areas that identified it as polished disappear, and the photograph becomes a silhouette of something that used to be shiny.

The second failure is placement rather than amount. Dark that sits across a flat face has nothing in the form to explain it, and a buyer can read it as tarnish, as a scratch or as dirt on the piece. Dark that follows a curve is read as the curve. Same card, same darkness, opposite meanings — which is why the position is checked against the shape of the piece rather than against the shape of the frame.

The third is the one that is easy to miss while concentrating on metal. A transparent stone shows what is behind it, as the ring guide sets out, so a card positioned to define a shank can quietly darken the stone at the same time. Look at the stone on its own before accepting the frame, and if the two needs conflict, shoot them as two frames instead of finding a position that serves neither.

Checking that the dark is doing work

Five checks. The first four are about the piece; the last one is about the decision.

  • You can point to an edge that the dark region created, and it follows the form rather than crossing it.
  • The piece still has bright areas — adding dark defined it rather than lowering all of it.
  • The card itself is out of frame, and only its boundary appears, inside the piece.
  • Nothing a buyer needs to inspect — a clasp, a setting, a joint, a mark — sits inside the dark region.
  • You have looked at the frame with the card and the frame without it, at full size, and chosen rather than assumed.

What this page does not cover

  • Shadow. The dark discussed here is an image in a reflective surface, not light prevented from reaching one. Relief, texture and cast shadow behave by a different mechanism and are handled separately on this site.
  • What the surface under the piece returns. That is a decision of its own, and it is made before this one — the guide on choosing a surface covers it.
  • Numbers. No distances, angles, card sizes or proportions appear here, because no measured source is recorded for them. Position is found by looking at the frame.
  • Colour and stone rendering. Adding dark changes what a piece returns, and judging colour under those conditions is a separate problem this page does not attempt.
  • Generating an image instead of photographing one. A model can be instructed toward a dark surround and defined edges, but an instruction describes what you asked for, not what the piece in front of you did.

The whole piece went dark when I added black. What went wrong?

The card is filling more of what the metal can see than intended, so it is replacing the reflection rather than shaping it. Move it back and to the side rather than removing it. Close in, small distances matter, so the difference between defining an edge and darkening everything is a short move.
